14 Nov Teach Your Child To Embrace Diversity With A Personalized Book From Loving Lion Books
When I was a child, I had a huge collection of fairy tale books which are all about the dreamy stories of these beautiful princesses – Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, and so on. I loved reading them all the time and believed everything I read in these books. Sometimes, my cousins and I would even re-enact these stories during our playtime. Needless to say, these books had a huge impact on me. I grew up thinking that life is pretty much similar to these fairy tales; but of course it wasn’t long enough until I found out that it’s not. It is a known fact that kids learn through play and through what they see. And with my experience as a child, I realized that books really have a huge influence with the way kids view things, which is why I try to be selective with the books that I get for my kids.
Now that I am a mom, I truly believe that it is important to choose books that are actual representations of what real life is. And that is where Loving Lion Books comes in. This children’s book company allows families to create a personalized book by choosing the main characters that most reflect the race and/or ethnicity of their family members. How amazing is that? A book that embraces diversity; a book that will help my kids block unhealthy racial bias which is of absolute importance in the world we’re living in. You can learn more about them here.

About Love Family – The Personalized Book
Love Family is a warm tale of a large, multiracial family, getting together for a family meal. It is told through the eyes of a young girl playing with her cousins while they wait for dinner. The book celebrates the everyday special joys of family. You can read more about the personalized book here.
The story of Love Family pretty much reminds me about my childhood whenever we were celebrating special occasions; which is one of the reasons why I really enjoyed reading it. The illustrations are really colorful and remarkable which makes it very interesting for the kids. I love how they depicted a diverse family with members belonging to different race and ethnicity with so much love and affection for each other. Plus, the values that are shown in the personalized book are some of the values that I want to instill in my kids – the kids are helping out at home, and the kids are very close to and loving with each family member.
We really enjoyed reading Love Family! However, my son didn’t seem interested at first because there was no boy character during the first few pages. But as soon as we got to the part where there were lots of kids, his face lit up after I quickly found a boy and told them that is him. And he got really excited about the personalized book after that.
My kids go to a school where the kids are pretty diverse. While we’re reading, they named the kids in the personalized book after their friends (in school). And surprisingly, the friends they mentioned matched the skin tones of the characters in the book; which proves that they really are observant and aware of their surroundings even if it doesn’t seem like they do. Since they can visualize their friends in the personalized book, they got more engaged while we’re reading and kept asking what their friends were doing in the book.
I truly hope that through this personalized book and through our examples, our kids are going to learn that it is absolutely normal for families, the one they’re born into and the ones they’ll eventually choose for themselves, to be diverse. And that they will fully embrace it with so much love just like how they depicted it in this book.
If you’re looking for a new children’s book with vibrant and beautiful illustrations, not to mention valuable lessons to impart to your kids, I highly recommend Love Family from Loving Lion Books. They are currently in the process of adding same gendered parents as selections for this book. They are also planning to create more children’s books that would furthermore encourage young kids to embrace diversity as they will be about siblings, single moms, single dads, women and girls who wear hijabs or chunnis, and a lot more. So make sure to visit their site, or follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to be updated about their upcoming books.
