Fun & Inexpensive Spring Activities To Do As A Family

Things Do In Spring That Are Budget-Friendly

As a mom, one of my hopes is that my kids will have a wonderful childhood with a lot of fun memories that they will love looking back on when they’re older. And every time the season changes, I see it as a huge opportunity to give them fun memories they will surely treasure by doing different activities they’ll get to enjoy. Like every fall, I make sure we go to a fall festival or we go apple picking. And since we’re already midway through February, I am so excited for the weather to FINALLY warm up so I can spend some time outdoors with my family. I can’t wait to have fun and do spring outdoor activities with them! If you’re looking for fun things to do with your family, then you’ve come to the right place! Today, I’ve rounded up fun and inexpensive spring activities that you can do with your family.

Note: I may receive commissions from clicks or purchases made through links in this post at no additional cost to you. While I wish these commissions were enough to let me stay at home with my kids, they’re really for paying the fees to keep this site up and running. Thank you for your continued support!

Visit The Farm This Spring

My kids love visiting the farm near us. We try to go there whenever the weather is nice – be it spring, summer, or winter. And we’ve been looking forward for warmer temperature so we can go there again. Visiting the farm with your family has always been a fun activity for kids, especially if you have younger ones.

Check out the farms near you to find out which ones you can visit when the weather finally warms up. If you live in Northern Virginia, you should absolutely check out Frying Pan Farm Park and Ticonderoga Farm. Instead of buying food in the farm, pack your own food just like what we do, so you can save.

Go To Playgrounds

Aren’t you excited to hit the outdoor playgrounds near you where your kids can play at FOR FREE?! This is seriously one of the spring outdoor activities that my kids have been looking forward to do! If your kids need a break from the house, head over to the nearest playground and let them play as much as they want! You might also want to pack some snacks and drinks with you when you go, so you’re ready when they get hungry and thirsty.

If it’s raining really hard and the kids are looking forward to hit the playground, then your next option is an indoor playground. Playing at indoor playgrounds is probably my kids’ favorite spring indoor activity. However, they can get pretty expensive because of the entrance fee and the fact that you have to buy snacks from them. But they usually end up having a lot of fun in there, so it’s all worth it.

Play In The Rain

Which kid wouldn’t love to play in the rain and jump in the puddles? In fact, I know some adults who would love to do that too, myself included. Make sure your kids have their spring essentials before you let them splash in the puddles. And if you can, join your child and have fun with them! I’m sure they will treasure that forever.

Growing up, my friends and I used to play in the rain and it was so much fun! It was one of the fun memories I always keep thinking about when I think about my childhood. I would love for my kids to have those fun memories as well.

Do Some Gardening Activities

Doing some gardening activities this spring is a great bonding activity for families while also allowing your kids to explore and learn about nature. Head over to your nearest store to get some seeds to plant. Involve your child in every step of the process by letting them choose which ones they’d like to plant. If you’re new to this like I am, then you’re probably also going to need a gardening kit.

Gardening is in my bucket list of “Things to do in Spring”; and I’ve been looking forward to do it with my family. I’ve been putting it off for a while because I feel like my son was too young to enjoy it last year; but we will absolutely start doing some gardening activities this year. Depending on how much they’re going to like it, we might do it every year and it might end up being one of our spring family traditions.

Go On A Family Bike Ride In Spring

Family bike rides is one of the family outdoor activities that every one will truly love! Enjoy the warm weather this spring by taking the entire family with you on a bike ride. If it is doable, instead of driving, go on a bike ride to a nearby ice cream or frozen yogurt shop.

Going on a bike ride together as a family is another thing that I am absolutely looking forward to this year. Both of my kids know how to bike now and I bet they will have fun doing this spring activity. Growing up, my dad used to take me wherever he goes and we would ALWAYS ride on his bike. It was one of my favorite childhood memories; and I cannot wait to do it with my own family.

Fly A Kite

Flying a kite is no doubt one of the fun things to do with your family this spring. I strongly suggest creating your own kites as it will surely be a another spring activity that your kids will love. You can create your own kites using plastics, sticks, and string. At least that’s what we used to use when I was a kid. Here is a simple tutorial on how to build one. But, you can also head to a store and just get one.

Enjoy The Cherry Blossom

This is one of the activities I look forward to every spring since migrating here in the U.S. Every year, we would go to Washington, D.C. and enjoy the beauty of cherry blossom. If you live in an area where you can see the cherry blossom, you should absolutely go and enjoy the scenery. And make sure to pack some food for everyone; that’s also a good time to have a picnic with your family. Once you’re there, just sit, relax, and enjoy this fleeting outdoor spring activity that you can do with your family.

Well, I no longer have kids at home, but hubby and I do enjoy getting outside after our long, cold, snowy Maine winters. Last year, we planted a flower and veggie garden in the raised beds in our fenced in back yard. We also had flowers in raised beds on either side of our front entry. However, my daughter and her family (including 3 of my 4 granddaughters) frequently do many of the activities you mentioned.

Those are fun activities! We planted as a family last year but sadly, the flowers kept dying. It’s in an area where it gets all the water from the roof whenever it rains. We’ll try a different area this year.
