How To Throw The Most Magical DIY Princess Themed Party

Growing up in the Philippines, my husband and I didn’t have birthday parties every year. Kids (back then) would only have a party on their 1st, 7th, (sometimes 13th), and 18th birthdays. We both agreed to do the same thing with our kids. But I guess growing up in the U.S. and attending parties left and right, my daughter kinda expected that that’s how it really is. She told us that she wanted to invite all her friends and have a party in our house for her 4th birthday. And since she’s into princesses right now, I thought throwing her a princess themed party would be perfect. So today, I’m going to share all the details about my daughter’s princess themed party.

Note: I may receive commissions from clicks or purchases made through links in this post at no additional cost to you. While I wish these commissions were enough to let me stay at home with my kids, they’re really for paying the fees to keep this site up and running. Thank you for your continued support!

How To Throw The Best Princess Themed Party For Your Little Girl

If you have a little girl who’s obsessed with princesses just like mine, then you’ve come to the right place. I will be sharing all the DIY (and not DIY) princess themed party decorations and ideas I did for my daughter’s 4th birthday party.

Location

I looked at several location options for the party but my husband and I came to the conclusion to just do it at our house because we didn’t want to spend another $200 – $300 to rent a location for 2 hours when we’re already spending that much for something much more valuable (see below). So even though our house isn’t big enough, we just rearranged our furniture to make it a little bit “party-friendly”.

DIY Princess Themed Party Invitation

Once we had the location set, I worked on the invitation. Usually, I would hire someone to do the invitation for the party. But since I’ve been designing a bunch of different things for the blog, I thought I’d give it a try. I thought it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just had to be cute and princess themed.

I used Canva to design the invitation, looked up some inspirations online, and brought my vision to life. Once done with the design, I copied and pasted the invitation on Microsoft Word with a black border set so I won’t have a hard time cutting each one. And then, I printed the invitation on a white cardstock, cut them, and handed one to each guest.

Princess Party Host

As I’ve mentioned earlier, instead of spending $200 – $300 for location, we’d rather spend it on something we knew my daughter would truly love. We decided to hire her favorite Disney princess, Rapunzel, from Princess Parties of DC for the party.

My daughter had no idea that Rapunzel is going to be at her party. She was really surprised; she got really shy at first but warmed up eventually. Rapunzel sang and danced with the kids, she helped the kids made their crafts (either crown or mask), she played some games with them outside, and she either painted the kid’s face or their nails (depending on what the kid or parent wants).

Rapunzel made sure that my daughter is being specially treated on her day, stayed for candle blowing, and made sure we were able to take special pictures of her with my daughter before she said goodbye. When asked what her favorite part of the party was, my daughter said it was Rapunzel. Everyone loved Rapunzel.

Jacklyn, the owner of Princess Parties of DC, was amazing! She was very flexible and offered suggestions on what activities the kids can do during the party. I’ve been texting her the night before the party and as the guests were arriving to make sure the timing of Rapunzel’s arrival was perfect. I couldn’t be any more pleased with their service and highly recommend them to anyone throwing a princess themed party. It was the best $200 dollars we’ve spent on a party!

DIY Princess Themed Cake & Tulle Cake Stand

When we threw a Safari themed party for my son 2 years ago, he wasn’t able to enjoy his cake because it wasn’t peanut-free (he has peanut allergy). So this time, I told my husband I’ll just bake my daughter’s cake. How hard can it be, right? All you need is a cake pan, cake mix, and icing… and you’re done! Or so I thought!

Well that was until my daughter specifically requested for a princess cake wearing a rainbow colored gown! RAINBOW COLORED GOWN! (I’m dead) I’ve tried baking cakes before and have failed multiple times, but I have never decorated one. So for 2 months, I watched YouTube videos, read articles, and consulted my friends who know how to bake a cake. I practiced decorating a cake every weekend.

I was so anxious that I’m going to fail. I know my princess themed cake wasn’t perfect and it probably won’t be even if I try to do it again. But when my daughter said “It is the best cake ever!!! I love my cake! I love you forever and ever!”… that’s the only thing I needed!

And I also made a matching tulle cake stand from scratch to make it more feminine. I put my turntable on top of a baking pan to add more height, secured it with a tape and worked off of that height for the tulle skirt.

Princess Themed Party Decorations

These are the princess themed decorations that we setup for the party which you can also use as inspiration when you plan your princess themed party.

DIY Princess Themed Birthday Banner

I sought help from a colleague, Kelly, who owns Glitz, Giggles and Glam Custom Creations. I chose all the materials and font to be used for the princess themed birthday banner. She cut all the pieces for me and I put everything together. She is the best! If you have any need for customization, send her a message on her Facebook page and I know you won’t be disappointed!

Right where my daughter’s name is, instead of using a crown or any other princess themed element, I thought using a picture of her wearing an Elsa costume would be perfect. And I seriously love how it looks because it’s more personalized.

DIY Castle

My daughter said she wanted a castle for her party. So my dad built a DIY castle for her made out of boxes and this vinyl stone brick wall. I wanted to make sure there’s still something pink in it, so we picked up this pink spray paint and spray painted the top of the castle.

Princess & Knight’s Station

I picked up a few sword & armor sets, along with blue necklaces for the boys; and some crowns, wands, and pink necklaces for the girls to play with.

They did play with these for a while but they spent most of their time interacting with Rapunzel. So if you have a party host or activities planned out for the entire party, I would recommend not doing this at all.

Dress Up Station

Since my daughter has a lot of princess dresses & shoes and a separate dresser for those in their play room, I thought it would be a great idea to take it upstairs for everyone to enjoy. A few of the kids tried out the dresses and some of my son’s costumes.

Princess Themed Birthday Chalkboard

I ordered the princess themed birthday chalkboard from Birthday Posters. I got a digital file which I had printed on a foam board. The owner, Urszula, was really easy to work with and very flexible. She let me specify which changes I wanted to do from her original design and didn’t charge anything extra for it. After she had finished the design, I did have 2 corrections (one of which was mine because I missed it when I sent her the text I wanted on the chalkboard) which she did in a timely manner without any issues.

And then I just went to Amazon and got the stand there.

DIY Labels

Just like the invitation, I did all the labels using Canva. I copied and pasted all the images to Microsoft word,  and printed on a white cardstock.

For the food labels, I cut a cardstock slightly bigger than the label and glued the excess piece on the back of it. I then folded it so it has a stand.

Balloons

I ordered the balloons from Luxy Balloons. Brittany, the owner was amazing to work with! I contacted her right through when I was at the initial planning phase of my daughter’s party. She provided input every step of the way and she really knows what she’s doing. She delivered exactly what I wanted and threw in a few balloons that tied in the princess theme really well. The balloons were truly amazing and the kids were all fighting to get as much as they could by the end of the party!

The main food that we served was really pizza. But we put out a bunch of princess themed food which the guests can eat anytime during the party.

Princess Themed Party Guest Book

Since I owned a bunch of classic Disney princesses books growing up, I thought they will make a great guest book. I got Cinderella, Beauty and the BeastThe Little Mermaid, Alladin, and Sleeping Beauty books from Amazon and spread them out on the Guest Book table, along with markers and instructions, for all the guests to sign.

Princess Themed Party Favors

markers, pen, notebook, ruler, stickers, with a princess themed favor tag, a princess themed party favor idea

I was able to find all of these party favors from Party City. However, I couldn’t find prince themed or knight themed party favors for the boys. So I went with my son’s favorite characters, Paw Patrol. I got all of them from Party City too.

The princess themed favor tag was done using Canva too.
