La Mer… Is It Worth The Price?

I used to have oily face during the summer months and dry face in winter. I’ve tried several different moisturizers but nothing worked. Every few months, I would try to find a new moisturizer in the hopes of solving my skin problem.

I was in the market for a new moisturizer and I heard about La Mer. To be honest, when I first heard about the brand, I told myself I won’t pay that much for a moisturizer. It’s just crazy!!! But the more I heard about it, the more I got curious so I started reading up about it. I read reviews from various websites like Nordstrom, Saks, Bloomingdale’s, and of course the company’s website (I was skeptical about the reviews on their website because I’m sure they can easily remove negative reviews just to make people think that everybody loves their product).
Creme de la Mer, Cleansing Foam, Regenerating Serum, and Eye Concentrate

To those of you who aren’t familiar, Creme de la Mer was developed by an aerospace scientist, Dr. Max Huber, who suffered an accident (an experiment exploded in his face and it was covered with burns). He was compelled to create something that would heal his skin, and that’s when he perfected the said creme. Find out more about them here and here.

Convinced with the reviews I found on the web, I decided to give it a try. I’ve tried several of their products but only found a few keepers. These are the ones that are still part of my skin-care routine.

The Cleansing Oil – This really does a good job of cleaning your skin but whenever I wear makeup (I don’t wear heavy makeup) or even just BB Cream, I found that I have to wash my face twice so that it removes everything. I don’t wear makeup and BB cream every day so that’s why I haven’t switched yet. I’ve been using this for 2 years and haven’t had any complains except that. It does leave my face feeling clean and soft after but I’ll probably be in the market for a new one once I run out of it. The entire 6.7 oz. bottle does last for a little less than a year; I ordered the bottle I have at home last February (this year) and I still have a little less than half left of it.

The Tonic – This toner does an effective job by cleaning any residue off of your face. It’s not drying and doesn’t sting at all. It leaves my face clean and ready for my moisturizer. The entire 6.7 oz. bottle lasted for more than a year; I ordered the bottle I have at home August of last year and I still have 1/3 left of it.

Creme de la Mer – This, and the Moisturizing Gel Cream, is AMAZING! It leaves my skin well-hydrated and dewy soft. I’ve been using this for 3 years and haven’t had any complains. I don’t use anything on top of it even during winter and it can hold up pretty well during the cold winter months. NO MORE DRY SKIN for me! Yeah!!! The 2 oz. jar lasted for a year . They do have a smaller one (0.5 oz.) that I usually get from Nordstrom (but it looks like it’s no longer available – not sure if it’s just temporary) and it lasts for a little less than a year. During summer, I only use it at night (when my skin needs more hydration); I feel like it’s too rich to use during the day.

You need to do something special to “activate the miracle broth” – You must warm a pea size amount for a few seconds between the fingers until it becomes translucent, then pressed gently into your skin. You can check out their video page on how to do this; I didn’t understand it either until I saw the video.

The Moisturizing Gel Cream – I use this during summer to help control the oil in my face; and this was the only answer to my oily skin. I am very happy to have found this. After initial application, my skin feels velvety and hydrated. A few hours after application, my face feels silky smooth (still not oily) and that’s how it will be all throughout the day. I can last all day without having to blot my face. My makeup stays on the whole day (if I’m wearing any); I don’t even need to do a single retouch.

I was also able to try these ones but decided they’re not for me. But for those who are interested to find out, here’s what I thought about them.

The Cleansing Foam – This one deeply cleans your skin by removing excess oil off of your face. You only need a tiny amount of this cleanser (even when wearing a makeup) and it really does a form a rich foam after massaging on your face. After washing it off, you’ll have that clean-face feeling but my face felt really dry after using it that’s why I didn’t like it. I’ve tried this 3 years ago, and I think they’ve reformulated their products since then; so I’m not sure if the new one is a little better than the one I’ve tried.

The Regenerating Serum –  I was able to try this because I got a deluxe sample of this; I only got to try it for 7 days or so though. But this serum is AMAZING! I loved it!!! My skin felt very soft and smooth when I had this on; I never thought my face could feel like that. I didn’t get the full size because I just couldn’t justify the cost because it wasn’t enough to keep my face from being dry during the winter months; I’d have to use Creme de la Mer on top of it.

The Refining Facial – I used this once a week and have read some reviews to leave it on your skin for a good 5 minutes before you wash it off. Just like the other products, you only need a tiny amount of this product. My skin felt softer after using it and my pores appear smaller but it seems like my face seems to be whiter too. I am not sure if it’s leaving some residue behind so I stopped using it.

Verdict: The products that worked for me really well are worth the price. I wouldn’t mind spending extra to use something that lives up to its promise. Although, of course, I wouldn’t mind switching if there’s a cheaper option that does the job really well too.

Helpful tip: If you find yourself wanting to try any of their products but doesn’t want to splurge just yet, my suggestion is to go to a La Mer counter in one of the nearest malls where you live and ask for some samples. Believe me, there samples will last for a few days so you have enough time to test it out for yourself. If you decide to get something from their website, they will give you any 2 samples of your choice. That’s also a good time to try out the other products that you are interested in.
